Making a Commitment Took me on a Journey

BenSpark's Photo-A-Day #1000

My name is Drew Bennett, I blog as BenSpark on BenSpark.com. I maintain Kim’s sites and she asked if I’d do up a Guest post for The Coach Shoppe. While setting up Kim’s site and editing the former site I came across one of Kim’s testimonials from someone who I’ve looked up to for a long time and who was an inspiration to me. That would be Christopher Williams. Christopher is an amazing folk singer which is very inspiring but I’m no musician so that is not what moved me to action. No, it was Christoper’s Photo-A-Day Project in 2002 that changed my life.

I started my own Photo-A-Day project by taking my first Photo-A-Day on April 9, 2005, my 31st birthday. The project was to be a yearlong commitment. It became something more than I could ever have imagined.

After completing my first full year of taking a photograph every single day I was completely hooked. One year turned to two, then three, then four and I’m closing in on completing five straight years. Through this process I have had the opportunity to not only chronicle my daily life in photos but the photo served as a vehicle to write more about my life and keep a detailed record of where we have been and what we have done as a family. In five years so much has changed:

  • I went from Single to Married
  • I lost my first close relatives.
  • I witnessed the birth of my daughter.
  • We shared the loss of two pregnancies.
  • I got to work on a movie in LA.
  • I spoke at blogging conferences.
  • I made many connections.
  • I chronicled weddings, parties and holidays.
  • I chronicled the different aspects of my daughter’s first two years of life.

Here are my Photo-A-Day photos from 2009.

Because of this project I found that I was able to make a major daily commitment to myself and also turn that into something that inspires and entertains an audience of great people; the community at BenSpark.com.

As a blogger, fresh original content is like gold, so why not mine some of that gold from your own claims.

What can you commit to for one year and turn into your signature content?

Who knows it may just last more than that first year.
