in Gratitude

Hugging has no unpleasant side effects and is all natural. There are no batteries to replace, it’s inflation-proof and non-fattening with no monthly payments. It’s non-taxable, non-polluting, and is, of course, fully refundable. ~ Author Unknown

Please join me for Free HUGS, on Saturday, October 17 at 12 noon on the NE side of Columbus Circle at the entrance to Central Park. This will be my fourth Annual Free Hugs day. This year I’m making it a wee bit earlier than usual to avoid the bitter cold day it was last year!

A shout out and thanks to my friend Scott Bloom and his firm Bloom Reality for donating our Free Hugs signs for all participants.

I saw this video Free Hugs Campaign by Juan Mann four years ago and it had a profound impact on me.  I can only tell you that I’ve never found one experience to be so amazingly healing and joyfilled as this simple event is.

You will be amazed at the impact you will have on others. People are genuinely moved by the experience. It’s the essence of unconditional love. Looking for nothing in return. And that is what stops the NY’ers cold in their tracks. No hitch, no secret motive, nothing but a warm sincere hug to get them through the day.

There are so many people (me included) that don’t receive touch each day. And there is a price to pay for that. We all have heard the stories of the newly born orphans who don’t develop properly due to a lack of human touch.

There was one woman last year who really hugged me. Holding back her tears she told me how sad she had been. How lonely. And how grateful she was to find some hope just in a hug.

The longest hug I’ve ever given was the first year to a 6 year old boy. His mother let him come over to me. I was all alone that first year and still a bit self conscious. He was so small I had to kneel to hug him properly. And he hugged me and he hugged me. And in the etiquette of hugging which is “don’t release until the other does” I was surprised that in spite of the one minute, two minute, three minutes that past he didn’t release! I looked at his mum imploring her to approve the hug continuing, which of course she did. Her reply, “He’s a lover.”

Most people want to know WHY are you doing this?! Who are you affiliated with? What’s your motive? Why? Why? Why? My answer is always the same: Because it’s a nice thing to do.

This might sound crazy to you but I can promise you this: You will have a natural high for at least 2 weeks afterward. You will walk away from your few minutes or a few hours of hugging feeling like you are on top of the world. You will believe again in mankind and the sweetness that human beings are capable of.

You will give love and be loved. I guarantee it. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon, now is it?
